Here’s a rather touching trailer for Dead Island: Riptide, the next installment in the Dead Island franchise. Damn! This almost made me cry!

Tags: What's in my disk tray? NBA 2K13 baby!

Finally! You can now use Jordan to abuse your online friends, too!

When it comes to sports video games, I’m a guy who likes to play what’s in season. Over the last 4 months, Madden NFL 13 has pretty much been a permanent fixture in my Xbox 360 disc tray. But now that football season is winding down, it’s time to say goodbye to Madden (aka. hello Ebay!) and ring in the new year with NBA 2K13. I finally cracked open the game on New Years Eve a couple weeks ago and was instantly impressed! Now, don’t get me wrong, the game does have a few issues. First, the overall gameplay appears to be largely the same as last year’s version. With the exception of Hall of Fame, all of the difficulty levels seem to favor the offense, making defense an afterthought (stealing the ball is often the only way to keep the other team from scoring). Also, some of the player models are downright funky! However, all gripes aside, 2K Sports nailed one major benefit to the series: YOU CAN FINALLY PLAY ONLINE WITH CLASSIC TEAMS!!!!

This is a feature that fans have been asking for since landing Michael Jordan as the franchise’s poster boy. You and your friend who lives 2,000 miles away can now renew the classic rivalries of Magic vs Bird, or Jordan’s Bulls vs “Bad Boy” Pistons, or Ewing vs Olajuwon, or whatever your heart’s desire! This is a MAJOR enhancement to a game that is already the best (..and ONLY) NBA hoops sim on the market. This game should easily hold my attention through June when the NBA finals wrap up!

    REVIEW

    ProsCons
Provides an extremely well-rounded hoops experience with TONS of gameplay options; Legendary teams are now playable online....'Nuff said!Defense is harder to play than it should be; Shooting 60% or better is normal, even on the higher difficulty levels; New control scheme is different but not better; Some player models look weird.

It appears that NBA 2K13 is bringin the heat this year even without the usual required competition. Overall, it sounds like a great review except this, “the series’ interface continues to be an archaic, convoluted mess. Some menus can’t be backed out of, while save screens stupidly leave you at the save menu even after you’re done saving – rather than taking you back to a menu where you can actually do something. Better to enjoy 2K13’s commendable gameplay and suffer through a poorly designed interface than vice versa, but still, how many years has it been like this now?”

I’m encouraged by the reviews that I’ve read. Sounds like the gameplay is being refined even further. However, I’m NOT encouraged by how little people are talking about the online features. It sounds like they still haven’t put the popular “my crew” mode back into the game. It also sounds like you still can’t run a league without having half the teams be CPU controlled. These are features that I LOVED in NBA 2K11. What gives??!!

    Tags: NBA Live 13 cancelled

For the second year in a row, EA Sports has cancelled it’s NBA Basketball sim. On the game’s official website, EA Sports Executive Vice President Andrew Wilson was quoted as saying “Making great games is not easy, and we’re just not there yet on NBA Live 13. Having continued to look at the game over the past few days, it’s clear that we won’t be ready in October. And rather than launch midway through the season, we’re going to sit out the full year and stay focused on making next year’s game great”.
Back in 2010, EA Sports decided to cancel it’s newly branded NBA Elite 11 for essentially the same reason. With each cancellation, video game hoops fans will continue to doubt EA Sports’ ability to ever compete with the dominant NBA 2K franchise.
